Christmas Appeal 2020

Christmas Appeal 2020

All we want for Christmas …

This year has been particularly difficult for Victorians who have experienced more than 100 days of lockdown. For Victorians living with diabetes, the fear of contracting COVID-19 is even worse.

All we want for Christmas is to bring some light to the thousands of Victorians living under the shadow of diabetes and COVID-19.

Please make a tax-deductible donation to our Christmas Appeal today. Your support this festive season means we can provide life-changing programs and fund research to help people of all ages and their families find freedom and a renewed sense of hope for the future.

Diabetes Victoria relies on generous Victorians like you to help those who are affected by all types of diabetes; including kids like Alex and Lucy.

Alex’s Story

Alex was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was just four years old. Not knowing how the diagnosis would change their family’s lives forever, his mum Karina shares:

“I just thought it was a matter of giving insulin and everything would be fine. After five days in hospital, learning how to check Alex’s blood glucose levels, giving insulin injections… we headed home overwhelmed and wondering how we would cope.”

The carefree childhood that Karina had dreamed of for Alex was swept away in an instant, replaced by constant vigilance, sleepless nights, needles and the always present threat of a hypo. COVID-19 brought even more stress as Karina has no idea how her son’s body might react if he catches the virus.

Families like Alex’s rely on services provided by Diabetes Victoria to gain advice and support they need so that he can manage his diabetes and prevent health complications.

 Lucy’s Story

Lucy was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2018 when she was five and a half, and due to COVID-19, she has learned remotely throughout the lockdown. Her parents are both essential workers who’ve had to take time off work to care for Lucy and her brother.

For her mum Amanda, Diabetes Victoria’s family camps have proven to be a lifeline for Lucy.
